What is the difference between sex and gender?

Quite simply, sex is the biological characteristics you are born with. These define us as ‘male’ or ‘female’ for medical purposes. But gender is different.

When we talk about gender we think ‘boy’ or ‘girl’. We have been taught by our society what to believe are ‘boy’ characteristics or ‘girl’ characteristics. Some examples of these might include that baby boys wear blue and girls wear pink. But these are just colours, they don’t really mean anything, it’s just that the society in which we live has decided one is a colour which belongs to boys and one which belongs to girls.

As human beings we like to try and understand each other, so many people like to rely on gender characteristics to help them identify if the person is a boy or a girl.
