For hundreds of years MEN and WOMEN have followed gender roles created for them by society.

For example, up until quite recently it was expected that men would go to work and be the main money earner. Women would stay at home, have children and do the housework.

There was little expectation that men would help out with roles like cooking or cleaning because that was ‘women’s work’. Similarly, it was not expected that women would do things like be in the army.

Lots of attitudes have changed in the last 100 years, but many of these attitudes still exist in society.
