Make your own Mess Up Journal.
One thing perfectionists fear is messing up, especially if someone is watching. So this is an opportunity to mess up on purpose! Consider it a form of immersion therapy. By giving yourself the chance to mess up you slowly break down the fears that were holding you back in the first place.
Grab yourself a blank notebook/journal or make yourself one by stapling together some paper.
Start by breaking the back of it, flick your way through some pages and give it a twist… so it doesn’t look so sparkly and new anymore.
Now grab some felt pens and colour the edges of the pages round the outside.
In a small group think of some activities that you can add to each page. To get you started here are a few ideas…
- · Scribble violently to a reckless abandon
- · Colour a page with your feet.
- · Make a mess on the page… clean it up
- · Fill each line on a page with a different pen/marker
- · Add your own page numbers
- · Cover this page with newspaper clippings
Spend some time creating your own mess up journal, then get to work messing it up. If you make a mistake DON”T WORRY! That’s the whole point.
You don’t have to finish this either… keep it with you, add to it when you feel a bout of perfectionism coming on, and remember mistakes, failures and challenges are all part of life.
