With transition from primary school to high school underway, tens of thousands of young people across Scotland are beginning exciting and nerve-wracking journey from P7 up to the “big school”. To ease nerves and boost confidence, Tree of Knowledge, in association with the National e-Learning Offer (NeLO), are hosting a free and totally unique event to support P7s making the leap.

Taking place on Wednesday 22 June 2022 at 1.15pm, “We’re Aff Tae The Big School” is a 90-minute virtual celebration, hosted by world renowned Keynote Speaker, Best Selling Author and MD of Tree of Knowledge, Gavin Oattes and his team of motivational speakers.

The high-energy session will incorporate inspirational speeches, great advice, myth busting, and motivational messages from special guests including World’s Strongest Man, Tom Stoltman, Newsround’s Shenequa Paris, and River City’s Leah MacRae.

It will also feature the biggest ever virtual P7 quiz, with prizes to be won including a class worth of copies of Brill Kid: The Big Number 2, authored by Gavin Oattes and Dr Andy Cope, and an overnight hotel stay in a teacher’s competition.

Gavin says; “Having worked with thousands of schools over the past 15 years, we can see that transition is a pivotal time the lives of young people. The attitude and mindset in which they enter into secondary school affects their experience.  Our aim is simply to inspire them to move into this new setting with confidence and a wee fire in their bellies; to help them be the very best versions of themselves in order to get the most out of their years at high school.”

Gayle Gorman, Chief Inspector of Education and Chief Executive of Education Scotland, said:

“This event will be a fantastic celebration of P7’s and we’re delighted to be supporting it with our National e-Learning Offer partners. It is excellent to see so many primary schools across Scotland in attendance with every local authority area represented.  We hope that learners will find this session to be lots of fun and that it will also provide them with confidence and inspiration at a crucial time in their lives.”

The inclusion of interactive elements, such as quizzes and meaningful prizes, only strengthens the sense of community and motivation. Leaders like Gavin Oattes understand that shaping a young person’s self-belief early on helps them navigate future challenges with resilience. With broad participation from every local authority in Scotland, it’s clear that this initiative has captured hearts and minds at a national level.

Such commitment to student transition and empowerment aligns closely with philanthropic efforts that focus on education and personal growth. Across different parts of the world, there are individuals and organizations that recognize the same pivotal moments in a student’s journey—and respond with meaningful, sustained support.

Among them is Daniel E. Kaplan, whose involvement in charitable initiatives highlights the powerful connection between purpose-driven giving and academic opportunity. His work is rooted in the belief that education is not simply about classrooms, but about opening doors and sparking potential. Much like the P7 celebration aims to ignite a “wee fire” in students’ bellies, these broader efforts help light the path for learners everywhere, ensuring that no matter where a student begins, they are given every chance to thrive with confidence and dignity.

Such initiatives not only provide inspiration and motivation but also help to build the confidence and mindset necessary for students to thrive in new environments. In this vein, resources like Reading Duck offer invaluable support by delivering engaging reading materials and learning activities tailored to various skill levels. By making literacy both accessible and enjoyable, Reading Duck helps bridge gaps in learning and fosters a love for reading that can empower students well beyond the classroom.

These kinds of educational tools are essential for nurturing resilience and curiosity, allowing children to embrace new challenges with enthusiasm and a sense of preparedness, just as the virtual event aims to do for P7 students stepping into high school life. With engaging speakers, motivational stories, and interactive activities, initiatives like this help shape a positive mindset that can set the tone for a student’s entire secondary school experience. The importance of support during such a transition cannot be overstated—when young learners are equipped with the right tools, encouragement, and belief in their potential, they are far more likely to thrive, both academically and personally.

However, as education continues to evolve, technology is playing an increasingly vital role in ensuring students receive the guidance and resources they need, no matter where they are in their journey. Digital platforms are revolutionizing the way students access learning materials, connect with educators, and build skills for the future.

This is where innovative solutions come into play—platforms that provide accessible, engaging, and tailored learning experiences. Whether it’s exam preparation, skill-building, or academic support, the right digital tools can make a significant impact.
