Let’s take some time to look outward and reflect on the best leaders you’ve encountered.
This exercise will help you identify positive leadership traits and consider how you might incorporate them into your own leadership style.
- Think of a leader you have worked with who has impressed you, this may be someone you have worked with or admired from afar.
- Reflecting on the leader you’ve identified, list 3-5 specific characteristics or actions that made them stand out. Consider:
- How did they communicate?
- How did they handle challenges?
- How did they motivate their team?
- What made them approachable or likeable?
- Can you align their style of leadership with the Blanchard model?
- Now, take a few minutes to reflect on how these leaders’ actions affected you or others:
- Â How did their leadership style make you feel?
- What impact did they have on team performance or morale?
- Can you recall a specific incident that showcases their leadership skills?
- Look at the characteristics and traits you’ve listed and consider:
- Which of these traits/qualities do you already possess?
- Which would you like to develop further?
- Now that you have considered specific traits and qualities that you would like to develop, create an action plan that will allow you to begin to incorporate these into your practice. By identifying and emulating the best qualities you’ve observed in others, you can continue to grow and develop as a leader.
