Emotions and Big Changes

You’ve just reflected on what you loved about primary school and what you’re looking forward to in secondary school.

That tells us something important – big changes often bring lots of feelings at the same time.

Now, let’s explore that together.

As a class, create a word bank of emotions that Year 6 pupils might be feeling right now as they prepare for secondary school.

As you build your list, pause to discuss:

  • Why might someone feel this way?
  • How might this feeling affect how they act or behave?

Some feelings might feel positive.
Some might feel uncomfortable.
All of them are normal.

If your list includes emotions that feel tricky or challenging, take a moment to think about:

  • What could help someone feeling this way?
  • Who could they talk to or get support from?

Optional pause for personal reflection:

Is there one emotion on the list that you recognise in yourself just now?

You don’t need to share it with the class. But if an emotion feels tricky or heavy, it can really help to talk to someone you trust, like a teacher, a parent or carer, or a friend.
