Looking Ahead to High School Together
This activity is about talking honestly and thinking ahead together.
Take a few minutes to work through the questions below as a family. There is no rush and no need to cover everything.
Step 1: Pupil first
Pupils, share your thoughts with your parent or carer.
- What are you most looking forward to about starting high school?
- What feels new, unfamiliar, or a bit worrying right now?
Parents or carers, your role here is simply to listen.
Step 2: Parent support
Parents or carers, respond by:
- Acknowledging how your child is feeling
- Reassuring them that these feelings are normal
- Sharing one small thing that helped you when you were facing a big change
Step 3: Planning together
Now, talk together about support and preparation.
- What might help make the first few weeks of high school feel easier?
- Are there any practical steps we could take together before the summer ends?
- How can we check in with each other if something feels tricky once term starts?
There are no right or wrong answers here.
The aim is not to solve everything today, but to practise talking openly and to remind yourselves that you can support each other through this change.
