Overcoming unconscious biases

Overcoming an unconscious bias can be challenging but the first step is accepting that we all have subconscious biases.

We are more likely to use an unconscious bias to make decisions when we are acting on the spur of the moment. We have to make a quick decision so slow down and take a step back.

Monitor your own behaviour, question your first impressions of people and reflect on any rapid decisions you make.

Widening your social circle helps to foster a greater understanding of people who’s lived experience is different from yours. This builds your cultural competence and leads to better understanding.

Speak out if you notice bias, don’t sit back and let it happen and apologise if you get it wrong.
