Resilience (or reboundaciousness!) is our ability to keep going when things feel difficult. It helps us bounce back when something doesn’t go to plan, adjust when things change, and try again after a knock back.
And here’s the thing. Every one of you has already shown resilience during your time at primary school.
- When you didn’t get the test result you hoped for
- When you fell out with your friends
- When the school football team lost
- Or when you opened your lunchbox expecting the cheese string you begged for… and found an old banana instead (Thanks, mum)
Resilience doesn’t mean we don’t get upset or frustrated. Those feelings are natural. Resilience is what comes after those feelings.
It’s noticing how you feel, processing it, and then deciding to move forward. It’s saying, “This is hard, but I can handle it,” or “This didn’t go to plan, but I can learn from it.”
Your move to secondary school is a big change. New routines, teachers, buildings, and expectations. Some days will feel exciting. Some might feel overwhelming. That’s normal.
Resilience will help you through it.
And the great news? Resilience is not something you either have or don’t have. It’s a skill you can build, practise and grow.
