Resilience in Secondary School

In secondary school, there will be many new situations where you might need to use resilience, including:

1. Finding your way around a bigger school

2. Making new friends when you don’t know many people

3. Dealing with a more challenging workload

4. Trying out for new clubs or teams

What we would like you to do is to discuss these situations in pairs or small groups, and for each example, try to answer the following questions:

• How might a new new pupil feel in each of these situations?

• What could they do, and how could they speak to, to help overcome these challenges?

After you have discussed these in pairs and small groups, share your thoughts with the class.

As you listen to each other, see if you can make a list of some great ideas on the board. This list could be called ‘Secondary School Strategies’ that you could all think of when faced with challenges in the year ahead.
