Health and Wellbeing Surveys for Secondary Schools

Health and Wellbeing, Mental Health, Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS)

For over 17 years, Tree of Knowledge has been delivering inspirational workshops in secondary schools that focus on developing a growth mindset and improved mental wellbeing. The introduction of initiatives like The Pupil Equity Fund and The Scottish Attainment Challenge has resulted in schools being required to track and measure pupil and staff progress regarding their mental health and wellbeing. They also know how difficult it can be to demonstrate this on paper… If you are one of those schools, TOK Research is at your service!

We have been accredited to use NHS Scotland’s Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) to survey your whole school including students, staff and parents four times throughout the year. Our team of Psychologists will collate this data into termly and annual reports showing exactly how the school is progressing regarding overall mental wellbeing, what aspects are going well and what you could perhaps improve on in the future. The surveys are divided into year group and gender and as a result, identify where the trends are throughout the year. By assessing what impact your current activities are having, you will be able to identify when you might wish to add, remove or change interventions in the future. As schools will be using TOK Research throughout Scotland, you will also be able to see how your school compares to those in other regions, as well as against the national average.

“Who’s in the Driving Seat?” helps children to develop a positive understanding of how their brain can work. You can only make one choice at a time but sometimes you’re torn between what’s fun right now and what’s helpful in the long run - a major challenge for children. Through fun and interactive challenges, pupils will learn how to develop a range of coping strategies which will help them make the right choice in the right situation. Choosing who is in the driving seat is the first step to building confidence, self-regulation skills and resilience.

Synopsis…

"Who Needs a Cape?" is a fun and highly interactive workshop that takes on a superhero slant. It helps pupils realise that they all have the skills and abilities to be super! By putting pupils to the test on a range of key superhero skills, they can begin to build their own ‘superhero’ profile. This helps them to see what sort of hero they naturally are, and helps them to identify any areas they need to work on. With a focus on the importance of determination and effort, this course leaves pupils feeling empowered as they realise you don't need a cape to be a superhero.

"Are We Nearly There Yet?" eases the transition for pupils between Primary and Secondary school. It is a fun and engaging look at the way we view ourselves and the challenges we face during our learning journey. The course focuses on recognising the potential in ourselves and the importance of a positive mindset in fulfilling it. Pupils will look at the effect our frame of mind has on learning and establish what a positive mindset entails. They will be challenged through fun, engaging activities which tackle issues that may worry them about the transition to secondary school.

Synopsis…

Speaking in public is one of the all-time number one top fears or phobias all over the world. Something about having to be the centre of attention and read stuff out just makes people run for cover and hope someone else will volunteer first. During this course, we use games and challenges to slowly, and carefully, break down the barriers that participants imagine is between them being scared and them delivering a great presentation. Having practised and perfected their speaking skills on the course, each participant will then be part of a presentation covering a specific topic valuable to their school. The audience will be amazed at the level of skill demonstrated at the end of this full-day course!

"The Enterprise, Employability and Manufacturing Challenge" has been designed to enhance learners understanding of the manufacturing industry through a range of enterprising activities. The key outcomes of this workshop sit within the enterprise and employability outcomes from BTC 4, giving learners the opportunity to experience and develop their knowledge and understanding of skills for life, learning and work such as: taking initiative, self-awareness and open mindset, openness, negotiation, evaluating risk and being creative and flexible. In addition, this workshop is designed to give learners the opportunity to explore the outcomes and experiences of Curriculum for Excellence.

Synopsis…

"Mind the Gap!" is our most sustainable programme to date. It is a progressive, multi-session course designed to assist in Closing the Attainment Gap that is present in Education. Mind the Gap! encourages the involvement of the individual pupil's support network by incorporating identified members of staff/key-workers throughout the programme with an opportunity to promote parental engagement upon completion of the programme. By involving each pupil’s support network, the programme has been designed to have a long-lasting impact on increasing their personal ambition and helping to develop and sustain a Growth Mindset.

Mind the Gap! is a fun and engaging programme comprising of a variety of hands-on, interactive activities which will challenge how participants think and feel about themselves and consider how they act and engage at school as well as in their personal lives. These challenges will identify and reinforce the importance of key transferable skills essential for school and the workplace. Participants will learn strategies to develop concentration and manage emotions. They will learn to recognise that their actions, choices and thoughts will have a long-term impact on their personal lives and career development. By becoming more self-aware, participants will develop the skills required to take ownership of their own learning. Participant’s progress will be measured before and after the programme using a questionnaire. Supporting staff will participate in a dedicated session to help ensure that the programme is sustainable and has long-term impact.

Communication. We all know how important it is. When we are delivering good news we all embrace it, but what about the more difficult conversations? The tricky ones, the uncomfortable ones, the downright horrible ones? This interactive workshop has been designed to enhance your communication and behaviour influence skills by starting with the basics. Based on the FBI’s hostage negotiation tactics, delegates will be introduced to the importance of active listening, empathy and rapport building before looking at how these influence and change behaviour. By employing positive coaching approaches such as Appreciative Inquiry and Solution Focused Brief Coaching, delegates will be left feeling empowered with a range of tools to help them deal with even the most challenging of situations.

Based on the FBI’s hostage negotiation tactics, delegates will be introduced to the importance of active listening, empathy and rapport building before looking at how these influence and change behaviour. By employing positive coaching approaches such as Appreciative Inquiry and Solution Focused Brief Coaching, delegates will be left feeling empowered with a range of tools to help them deal with even the most challenging of situations.

By increasing the client’s self-awareness, they will understand how to better employ their strengths. Appreciative Inquiry is the truest form of empowerment.
