Introducing TOK Research

Health and Wellbeing Surveys for Secondary Schools

For over 17 years Tree of Knowledge, has been delivering inspirational workshops in secondary schools that focus on developing a growth mindset and improved mental wellbeing. The introduction of initiatives like The Pupil Equity Fund and The Scottish Attainment Challenge has resulted in schools being required to measure how they are doing regarding the mental wellbeing of their students and staff. They also know how difficult it can be to demonstrate this on paper… If you are one of those schools, TOK Research is at your service!

We have been accredited to use NHS Scotland’s Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) to survey your whole school including students, staff and parents four times throughout the year. Our team of Psychologists will collate this data into termly and annual reports showing exactly how the school is progressing regarding overall mental wellbeing, what aspects are going well and what you could perhaps improve on in the future. The surveys are divided into year group and gender and as a result identify where the trends are throughout the year. By assessing what impact your current activities are having, you will be able to identify when you might wish to add, remove or change interventions in the future. As schools will be using TOK Research throughout Scotland, you will also be able to see how your school compares to those in other regions, as well as against the national average.

The following link is a short introduction video about TOK Research and can answer any questions that you may have.

Who's in the Driving Seat?

Scotland P5, England Year 4

Resilience, Self-regulation, Mindset

What our speakers say…

"It is amazing how effectively children in this age group approach the challenges in this workshop. Teachers comment on how impressed they are that children suddenly find their niche in this course. Although based on sound research, there is no sciencey-sounding talk in this course, it is a simple and straightforward way to approach decision making and self-regulation using ideas that 8-9-year-olds can get a hold of. The children create the learning points throughout and the course leaves the teacher with a strategy to reinforce the messages once the day is over."

Synopsis…

“Who’s in the Driving Seat?” helps children to develop a positive understanding of how their brain can work. You can only make one choice at a time but sometimes you’re torn between what’s fun right now and what’s helpful in the long run - a major challenge for children. Through fun and interactive challenges, pupils will learn how to develop a range of coping strategies which will help them make the right choice in the right situation. Choosing who is in the driving seat is the first step to building confidence, self-regulation skills and resilience.

Who Needs a Cape?

Scotland P6, England Year 5

Transferable Skills, Ability, Potential, Self-improvement, Self-belief

What our speakers say…

“This workshop is a lot of fun. Who doesn’t like talking about superheroes right? All good superheroes need a combination of physical, creative, logical and teamwork attributes but the best thing is that the pupils have a laugh discovering what their combination is.”

Synopsis…

"Who Needs a Cape?" is a fun and highly interactive workshop that takes on a superhero slant. It helps pupils realise that they all have the skills and abilities to be super! By putting pupils to the test on a range of key superhero skills, they can begin to build their own ‘superhero’ profile. This helps them to see what sort of hero they naturally are, and helps them to identify any areas they need to work on. With a focus on the importance of determination and effort, this course leaves pupils feeling empowered as they realise you don't need a cape to be a superhero.

Perfect Presentations

Scotland P5 - P7

Communication, Confidence, Leadership, Presentations

What our speakers say…

"Speaking in public is one of the all-time number one top fears or phobias all over the world. Something about having to be the centre of attention and read stuff out just makes people run for cover and hope someone else will volunteer first. During this course, we use games and challenges to slowly, and carefully, break down the barriers that participants imagine is between them being scared and them delivering a great presentation. Having practised and perfected their speaking skills on the course, each participant will then be part of a presentation covering a specific topic valuable to their school. The audience will be amazed at the level of skill demonstrated at the end of this full-day course!."

Synopsis…

Getting to spend all day with a small group, deal with their preconceptions and help them overcome a very real and common fear in a single day is an absolute joy. The journey is difficult for some and seeing the transition towards confidence never ceases to amaze. As a professional speaker, getting the opportunity to pass on hard skills is just great. What’s learnt on the course isn’t just technical presentation skills of course, regardless of how valuable these are for education and future work, participants get to face up to intimidating challenges and perform in the face of fears! What’s more valuable than that?

Mind the Gap!

Targeted PEF Programme (P7 - S3)

What our speakers say…

“This course gives us, the speakers, a chance to connect with where the kids are with their education and development. Are they interested in a particular career or job and struggling to make the connection between getting the skills needed and what’s being taught in school? Are they disengaged with the process entirely due to mindset or motivation? During each session, we can build on the last and help the kids recognise ways that their aspirations are being held back and how to overcome them. There are loads of activities, excellent learning points and with a sustainable approach, this is a very rewarding course to work on.”

Synopsis…

"Mind the Gap!" is our most sustainable programme to date. It is a progressive, multi-session course designed to assist in Closing the Attainment Gap that is present in Education. Mind the Gap! encourages the involvement of the individual pupil's support network by incorporating identified members of staff/key-workers throughout the programme with an opportunity to promote parental engagement upon completion of the programme. By involving each pupil’s support network, the programme has been designed to have a long-lasting impact on increasing their personal ambition and helping to develop and sustain a Growth Mindset.

These challenges will identify and reinforce the importance of key transferable skills essential for school and the workplace. Participants will learn strategies to develop concentration and manage emotions. They will learn to recognise that their actions, choices and thoughts will have a long-term impact on their personal lives and career development. By becoming more self-aware, participants will develop the skills required to take ownership of their own learning. Participant’s progress will be measured before and after the programme using a questionnaire. Supporting staff will participate in a dedicated session to help ensure that the programme is sustainable and has long-term impact.

Scotland S2, England Year 9

Emotional Intelligence, Self-Control, Self-Regulation, Chimp Paradox

What our speakers say…

"It’s great to see how the pupils react when they are challenged in different ways and how much their emotions impact their performance. It is always really interesting to find out what really grind their gears, the things that cause their "chimp" to take control, and then watch them learn how simple awareness of their own chimps can lead to better control of their emotions and a better performance as a result. Plus, you get to meet everyone’s inner monkey!"

What our speakers say...

"All members of staff get to meet their inner chimp during this workshop. It is hilarious finding out all the little things that wind them up, but even more amazing than that is finding out what individuals truly value."

Synopsis...

Our brains are busy places full of stuff. Some of it matters and some of it doesn't. Some of it winds us up, some of it takes up all our mental space. This course helps delegates to identify the important from the unimportant and shows them how to regulate their emotions to help them focus on the important stuff. Emotional intelligence is a fundamental skill for all employees in all businesses. It's what sets star performers apart from the rest of the pack.

What our speakers say...

"Watching members of staff define what makes a High Performing Team and then rate themselves based on their own criteria is eye-opening. Then through a range of seemingly random challenges, they get to uncover how good they really are and recognise how awesome they have the potential to be."

Synopsis...

Simply put, high performing teams just click. This doesn’t mean that they’re always the best of friends but they are all focused on achieving their collective goal. It’s a dynamic balance, an art that once achieved provides the rocket fuel for people to not just enjoy what they do, but to be world class at it. In this course, we draw from researchers who have studied some of the worlds most successful teams such as the New Zealand All Blacks, Pixar and even the SAS. We’ll also discuss the need for a clear ambition, daily focus and high expectations where delegates will get the opportunity to apply this to their own organisation. Running throughout this workshop we also give all staff the opportunity to get the “social glue” flowing through engaging challenges, helping bind teams together.

Communication Breakdown?

All staff

Influencing Skills, Communication Skills, Appreciative Inquiry, Positive Coaching, Mindset

What our speakers say…

"Absolutely everything in business is underpinned by either great communication or poor communication. People need guidance to know where they are headed and how they're expected to get there, without it they tend to just do it their own way. Understanding the basics of communication to help influence behaviour is important but understanding why we need to get the basics right is crucial."

Synopsis…

Communication. We all know how important it is. When we are delivering good news we all embrace it, but what about the more difficult conversations? The tricky ones, the uncomfortable ones, the downright horrible ones? This interactive workshop has been designed to enhance your communication and behaviour influence skills by starting with the basics. Based on the FBI’s hostage negotiation tactics, delegates will be introduced to the importance of active listening, empathy and rapport building before looking at how these influence and change behaviour. By employing positive coaching approaches such as Appreciative Inquiry and Solution Focused Brief Coaching, delegates will be left feeling empowered with a range of tools to help them deal with even the most challenging of situations.

Engage for Excellence

All staff

Change Management, Engagement, Flourishing, Leadership, Happiness, Positive Relationships

What our speakers say...

"This course gives staff an opportunity to get back to why they are doing what they’re doing, how they relate to those they work with and what could be done to make the whole school click better. There are parts of this course that really make it stand out to the speaking team. When we discuss communication we use an activity purposely designed to create an imbalance during the activity and the way all staff immediately identify where the same imbalances affect their daily practice and how to avoid them – it really is excellent! A benefit to members of staff straight away!"

Synopsis...

Why do you do what you do? Love? Passion? To make a difference? Pay the bills?

Understanding what motivates you and your team is a key to driving forward a successful business. Drawing on the most current Positive Psychology theory we look at the impact of Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment on performance. It poses the question of how we actually engage people. Is it through policy and strategy alone? Or is it the outcome of getting all the other stuff right?

Conferences - Keynotes and Hosting

Employees old and new, your business and ultimately you!

People love to hear real people talk about real life and we all know that the speaker you choose for your event can make the difference between a good event and a great event. Not one of our speakers has won a medal in the Olympics, not one has climbed a mountain and no one in our company has had to overcome any major adversity in life but they are some of the most natural, gifted and entertaining speakers around.

Our unique team of speakers will take your audience on the most wonderful journey of laughter and learning while engaging, challenging and inspiring them from beginning to end. Drawing from real life experiences our speakers create presentations that everyone can relate to. From warm-up sessions to keynote speeches our ‘Entertaining, Enlightening and Educating’ approach provides a fantastic experience that is memorable and one which delivers sustainable learning outcomes. We are proud of the fact that organisations all over the world use TOK services year after year and continue to offer first class feedback.

“As event organisers, the speakers at TOK are always the first people whom we propose to our clients when designing the programme for a conference or an awards ceremony. Having worked with Gavin and the team for over 4 years now, I have total faith in them that they will always deliver to the clients individual brief, whether that is speaking or hosting an event and they always receive over a 95% satisfaction score in delegate/guest feedback. They do this in a fun way, always putting a smile on peoples faces” David Ward, Director, Connect In Events

“We have used Tree of Knowledge at our employee conferences for the last 2 years and they have proven to be a big hit with our workforce. First and foremost, they have boundless energy and enthusiasm which cannot fail to motivate and inspire and they instil a fun element into the event which has definitely been carried back to our workplace. Thank you so much for helping us on our journey of change.” Laura Gibson, Executive Assistant Castle Precision Engineering

“Alice’s session was a HUGE hit. Everyone who submitted a feedback form (around 145 forms) said that her session was the best part of the day and from start to finish, everyone was hooked. The whole interactive way of presenting was completely different from what had gone on earlier in the day and really just got everyone talking. That and the fact that Alice is completely engaging and funny.” Lesley Hoggan at Scottish Power

World-class conference keynote speakers are very rare. Awful keynote speakers are unfortunately very common and dreaded by conference participants everywhere.

A great keynote speaker can entertain, enlighten and educate. They create a buzz, bring hope and can boost conference morale.

At TOK our speakers grab onto the opportunity to take their audience on an intellectual and emotional journey, propelling them to a new place, position, or outlook. People only take action because of other people, and a keynote speaker has the opportunity to do exactly that. Our speakers know exactly how to make the most of this situation.

You may not remember everything our speakers say but you'll remember exactly how they made you feel.

“Gavin hosted our event and followed our brief to the letter – inspiring, motivating, adaptable and creative. He kept the audience energised and enthused throughout the day and was a joy to work with – top guy!” Karen Clark, Project Manager, Elevator

Vision and Values, Emotional Intelligence, Teamwork, Resilience, Comfort Zones, Self-Awareness

What our speakers say...

"Delegates get to meet their inner chimp during this workshop.

If we aren't contributing to the emotional, physical and psychological health and wellbeing of our team, we are unlikely to achieve transformation.

Creating High Performing Teams

Employees old and new, your business and ultimately you!

Social Cohesion, Task Cohesion, Culture, Behaviours, Leadership, Teamwork

What our speakers say...

"Watching delegates define what makes a High Performing Team and then rate themselves based on their own criteria is eye-opening. Then through a range of seemingly random challenges they get to uncover how good they really are and recognise how awesome they have the potential to be."

Synopsis...

Simply put, high performing teams just click. This doesn’t mean that they’re always the best of friends but they are all focused on achieving their collective goal. It’s a dynamic balance, an art that once achieved provides the rocket fuel for people to not just enjoy what they do, but to be world class at it. In this course we draw from researchers who have studied some of the worlds most successful teams such as the New Zealand All Blacks, Pixar and even the SAS. We’ll also discuss the need for a clear ambition, daily focus and high expectations where delegates will get the opportunity to apply this to their own organisation. Running throughout this workshop we also give delegates the opportunity to get the “social glue” flowing through engaging challenges, helping bind teams together.

Engage for Excellence

Employees old and new, your business and ultimately you!

Change Management, Engagement, Flourishing, Leadership, Happiness, Positive Relationships

What our speakers say...

"This course really gets beyond the nonsense and under the skin of the business. People quickly start to realise the effort they need to put in to get them where they want to be, and how to take their whole team with them."

Communication Breakdown?

Employees old and new, your business and ultimately you!

Leadership and Engagement Programs

Managers, Leaders, Aspiring Managers and Leaders - can be adapted to suit lower levels of staff

Positive Psychology, Coaching, Leadership, Engagement, Leadership Development, Personal Development

Leadership and Engagement are difficult concepts to define, yet great leadership and excellent staff engagement are more critical than ever before. Developing inspiring leaders and increasing employee engagement are key to becoming high performing organisations. This requires challenging attitudes and behaviours which characterise and relate to humanity, creating opportunities for people to be left feeling inspired, empowered and ready to flourish! Our bespoke leadership and engagement programs are designed to help you do just that!

What can the programs include?

From motivational workshops for all, to targeted skills development, consultation, positive psychology coaching, facilitation and action learning sets, we will find the perfect combination to meet the needs of your staff!

Why are our programs so awesome?

Designed in collaboration with you, TOK strive to create bespoke programs that perfectly fit the needs of your organisation. Based on a multitude of themes including Motivation, Change Management, Resilience, Leadership, Empowerment, Engagement, Communication and Appreciative Inquiry, we can devise a program to fit the needs of individual clients, for all levels of staff. These programs are highly engaging, thought provoking, sustainable, and practically applicable and unlike any other leadership program you have ever experienced!

Consultation and Facilitation

We work with a wide range of organisations to help facilitate change and engagement strategies. Using a range of tools from the realm of positive psychology coaching and appreciative inquiry, we encourage delegates to explore both positive and negative aspects of events or challenges, focusing on solutions, while maintaining a calm and relaxed atmosphere.

Action Learning Sets

Working with groups of between 5-7 staff, we facilitate action learning sets designed to help staff at all levels tackle live business issues. Action Learning Sets are structured to give everyone “air time” about their individual challenges. During a participant’s “air time” other members of the set attentively listen to the participant presenting the issue and will ask questions to help them better understand and begin to resolve the issue themselves. Set meetings are not about solving a problem for someone else, but helping them resolve the issue themselves through effective questioning, reflection and if appropriate the suggestion of options. These are a great way of building relationships across teams and sharing best practice in a safe and supportive environment.

Career Workshops

What did you want to be when you grew up? Doctor? Artist? Rocket Scientist? Unemployed?!

No one goes through their school career wanting to be, or looking forward to the prospect of being unemployed when they leave school.

The office of national statistics put youth unemployment at a massive 68,000. Why is it that unemployment rates amongst young people in the UK are three times higher than the average unemployment figure and double that of the top performing European countries?

“We are simply not preparing or equipping these young people for the world of work. There must be much more focus on providing them with the skills, qualifications and vocational pathways that will lead directly to employment opportunities.”

Wood Commission, 2014

In June 2012 we diversified and launched ourselves into the employability sector by creating brand new courses to be used for prerecruitment projects across Scotland. The experience of developing new courses and resources for the employability sector, delivering them and seeing the positive outcomes filled everyone with a great sense of achievement and pride. We decided to take ourselves back to the drawing board with the aim to do more... much more!

We are now more ready than ever to help people to find their way to a positive destination! In line with the recommendations of the Wood Commission and with the Scottish Government’s Youth Employment Strategy we have developed a whole range of programmes that help make people more employable, confident and resilient. In addition to 16+ we also enhance career education in schools. We have a complete diet of courses for primary 6 up to senior phase ranging from early skills identification to enterprise, employability and manufacturing skills, CV writing, presentation skills, soft skills and even opportunities to engage with business partners.
