Over the summer holidays of 2020, pupils, parents and teachers from across Scotland nominated their Lockdown Legends; a teacher or member of school staff who has gone above and beyond during the lockdown; in a nationwide search to recognise their efforts.

A month of nominations resulted in a grand total of 242 nominations, for 136 individuals including teachers, head teachers, classroom assistants, librarians, technicians and family link workers.

All of the Lockdown Legend nominees are celebrated in the Virtual Hall of Fame, along with their nomination to showcase their incredible efforts and imaginative responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two top prizes of a weekend break in a treehouse were up for grabs – read on to find out the winners!

The team at Tree of Knowledge, the Scottish inspirational training organisation, who are behind Lockdown Legends, were so overwhelmed with all of the responses that they brought in a panel of expert judges to assess the nominations, and shortlist to a final five who would go on to face a public vote.

The esteemed panel was made up of Gayle Gorman (CEO of Education Scotland), Louise Macdonald (CEO of Young Scot), Graham Hutton (President of School Leaders Scotland), Gayle Shepherd (Director of People and Technology at SEC), and Stuart Brown (Head of Branch and Business Banking at Barclays).

The Top 5 as selected by the expert judging panel was:

  • Gaela Hall, Librarian, Doon Academy
  • Aileen Mackay, Head Teacher, Smithton Primary School
  • Karen Reid, Family Link Worker, Glenrothes High School
  • Diane Crosbie, Teacher, Glenwood High School
  • Lisa Colburn, Teacher, Masterton Primary School

Speaking about the shortlisting process, Gayle Shepherd from SEC, said; “I’m delighted to be part of this initiative – reading through these nominations is very humbling. It’s been a difficult task to narrow down the nominations, as they are all so deserving in their own right.  The effort and impact of these people has been significant.”

The public vote took place online from Monday 24 – Sunday 30 August 2020. And…after 6 weeks, hundreds of nominations, and thousands of messages os support across social media, the winners of the weekend breaks in a treehouse are…

CONGRATULATIONS from the whole team at Tree of Knowledge and THANK YOU from the education community from across Scotland!
